'Cigarettes And A Ticket' Land Maryland Man $1,000-a-week-For-Life Lottery Prize

A Maryland man who stopped at a local Giant store to pick up a lottery ticket and pack of cigarettes ended up winning the second-tier prize on a Cash4Life drawing earlier this month.

The man said that he's keeping his big win a secret from the public.

The Silver Spring man, an IT worker, made a quick stop at Giant on International Drive in Silver Spring and grabbed the ticket for the Thursday, Feb. 8 drawing.

He didn’t check the ticket until four days later, however, and continued to keep it hidden in the pocket of a pair of short in the bottom of a dresser drawer.

He later stopped at lottery headquarters in Baltimore to cash in his winnings alongside a friend of 40 years — the only other person he’s told of his winnings aside from his wife, he says.

When asked to choose $1,000 a week for life (paid in annual installments); or a one-time payment of $1 million, the man selected the one-time payment option and plans to invest, pay off bills, and keep working.

For selling a second-tier winning Cash4Life ticket, Giant #135 at 3860 International Drive in Silver Spring receives a $2,500 bonus from the lottery.
